Over the last decade or so Sanguine Estate have steadily built a reputation as one of Heathcote’s top producers making rich, intensely flavoured wines that have brought a loyal following. Their entry level Shiraz ‘Progeny’ is consistently one of the districts best buys. Ben Riggs continues to consult the Hunter family in their endeavours. Maturation takes place in predominately French oak barriques, approximately 15% new, for a period of 12 months. Sanguine Estate 2019 Progeny Shiraz is a magnificent saturated inky black colour with an equally deep dark purple black hue. A touch restrained at first the nose slowly evolves to reveal crushed blackberry, liquorice, graphite, vanillin cedar, black olive and black pepper scents. Rich and youthful, the palate sees an explosion of blackberry, liquorice and black cherry fruits contained within a tightly knit framework. Elements of vanillin cedar, subtle graphite and black pepper complete the picture. Muscular in its feel with energetic acidity and stern tannins. Excellent power with a long robust black pepper infused aftertaste.
